Oceanside 70.3 (1.2mi swim/56mi bike/13.1mi run)

6/309 age group (close to the average XTERRA field size)

Back on the road triathlon circuit this year with a goal to race on the Big Island in October. The Oceanside Half Ironman was a fitness check to evaluate the new training plan, dial in nutrition, and get used to racing on asphalt. Weird.

The Oceanside harbor swim was brisk at 0657 Saturday morning, but the water felt great and I felt comfortable the whole way around. The picture to the left is me trying to use make use of my frozen hands coming out of the swim.

Heading north out of transition towards San Clemente (and specifically the Trestles surf spot access trail - a favorite of mine in my youth), I caught up to my Epic Camp mates, Gordo Byrn and Mark Pietrofesa. I really enjoyed training with these guys and have to say racing with them is just a blast. We rode steady around the Camp Pendleton circuit and came back into the Oceanside transition holding down the top three spots. I felt really good on the run, but not good enough to hold off the speedsters for a podium spot. Maybe eating something on the run would have been a good call?!? Next time. Definitely a great day of racing.

St George Utah Ironman up next.

I'm laying in bed, it's 2 A.M. and I've just eaten another mint Oreo. This could turn into a problem one day. But for now your the only person I've told so SHHH.... While were up check this out. I was bopping around in the sunshine celebrating the start of spring and took this photo on Donner Summit this weekend. My forehead reminds me of Foghorn Leghorn who once said " Boy's about as sharp as a bowling ball ".

Earlier today I continued fiesta verano by racing the Land Park E3 Crit and placed 6th for my first upgrade points plus $30. Shout out to Jesse Miller Smith who rode a two man break into 2nd place yesterday in the Bariani RR. Clearly kicking ass.

Awesome day.

Elite 3/4

Fast. Technical turns and streets. Second position for the last two laps and riding super strong. Made my sprint move and a rider from behind me yelled at me so loud and panic-stricken that it scared me out of my move, balance and momentum. His violent screaming turned into my bad luck. I should have just kept pedaling but it was just so scary thinking someone was going to run into me. He didn't. We rolled across the line not even racing and I still got in the top 18?

Good cool down in between.

Masters 35+ 3/4

More comfortable pace. Smaller field. First double race day. Cool. A little tired. Raced really well. Made my move a little late? Placed 7th. Felt great sprinting. Crunching from the core with light feet and gaining momentum all the way to the line. I've visualized feeling that laying in bed so that it would happen in a race. And it did....

It's that time of year again. What time of year? The time of year when tighter spandex gets you props, Clif bars are always around, and snot rocket skills ice the cake. To all you blue haired mohawkers out there, this video is for you. Oh, I know, I haven't published in awhile; buckle your seat belts cause things are gonna change, so set your clocks forward and I'll see you around the bend.

A photo from a recent training trip to Verdi, NV. Twenty two miles north east of Truckee just past Mystic. Sprint intervals. Sunny and cold. Race season has begun. Shout out to my buddy Nate Freed who just threw down at the first major Pro Elite race of the national calendar in Merced, CA. Way to hang dog!!!!!!

Crystal Peak bridge. Also known as Oneil's Crossing. The infamous Walden's ride intersects history and the Truckee river here. Site of the original 1860 lumber settlement. Crystal Peak was later named Verdi after the Italian composer.
